Reindeer Elaborating

In writing, the class  continues to work on hooking the reader in and elaborating.  We have learned that both of these "ingredients" help to make a narrative.  Over the next couple months we will learn about the other "ingredients" needed in a narrative.

We used the app  Chatterpix to record our reindeer writing.    Unfortunately, Chatterpix only allows us to record 30 seconds of our writing.  So, you will also see a photo of your child's entire writing piece as well.  I am sure you will be as impressed with the kids' hard work as I was!!

More With Osmo

Last week the kids explored Osmo Numbers.  Kids arrange number tiles to build numbers and complete levels all while working at their own pace.  "When kids get the idea that there are multiple good ways to solve a problem, math becomes creative and fun." (Osmo.com)

Caden's Experiment: Refraction

Haunted House Writing

In writing we are working on using our senses to elaborate when we write.  Listen to our haunted house writing.  You will be amazed to hear the vivid, "juicy" language the kids used to describe what they discovered in their haunted houses!

Batty About Bats!

In reading, we've been reading nonfiction articles on bats.  The kids have become bat experts!!!
We've learned that great readers look back in the text and find proof when answering questions.
Readers also have their brains turned on when they read so they can learn new information.  Check out some facts we learned on bats!

Knuffle Bunny Retells

In reading, we've been working on retelling fiction stories. We've talked about when we retell we need to mention the most important parts of the story.  The kids know that fiction stories have characters, setting, a problem, and solution. Sometimes it is difficult for second graders to put their retells in a proper sequence and include the "most important" details.  We use this chart to help :
Try using this chart at home when your child's finished reading a fiction book!

We practiced retelling using Mo Willems' Knuffle Bunny  books.  Be sure to check them out!

I-Pick Rap

This week we learned The IPICK Rap.  Check it out.  This rap teaches us how to choose a "just right" book!  Check it out!

We also read a book called, Goldisocks and the Three Libearians.  This book taught us about the 5-Finger Test.  Ask your child how he/she knows if the book they are reading passes the 5-Finger Test.
