Work on Writing
Today we practiced another part of The Daily Five, Work on Writing. During work on writing we build stamina and independence as we write in our journals.

More Daily Five!
The kids continue to work hard to build reading stamina during read to self. This week we will read up to 20 minutes! We've also launched two more components of the Daily 5: Listen to Reading and Work on Writing.
During Listen to Reading the kids use Raz-Kids to listen to and read stories that are at their "just right" reading level. They also get to check their comprehension by taking a quiz. There is a link to this program under Great Websites right here on the Blog. My teacher name is MrsA2015. Kids earn stars each time they listen, read and complete a quiz that they can trade in to build their own personalized robot or rocket!
During Work on Writing kids work on applying phonics and writing skills in personal journals. Right now the kids are choosing to write about a topic of choice. Many children write about their weekends, what's new, or visit their Heart Maps for ideas! Kids have the opportunity to share their journal writing with classmates as well! Here are some photos from last week's work on writing!

What is the Daily 5?
Daily 5 is how we structure our literacy block in second grade. Children complete meaningful literacy tasks that promote independence while fostering a love for reading and writing. The Daily 5 allows your child to work at his/her "just right" level. The components for Daily 5 are:
- Read to self
- Work on writing
- Word Work
- Listen to reading
- Read to Someone
Right now, we are focusing on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self and Work on Writing. Within the next couple weeks, the other components of Daily 5 will be introduced. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be meeting with small groups and conferencing with individual students. Check out the kids building their stamina during their read to self time! Ask your child to tell you the three ways to read a book!

Read to Someone
We are working on learning the last of the daily five: Read to Someone!
Read to someone allows children to build fluency and comprehension skills while reading with a partner. During read to someone we:
1. Sit EEKK (elbow to elbow, knee to knee)
2. Sit with the text in the middle
3. Get started right away
4. Read the whole time
5. Read with our eyes, brain, and voice!

Daily Five: Reading Stamina
We reached 15 minutes on our stamina graphs!
What does this mean? It means during Read To Self students...
What does this mean? It means during Read To Self students...
- Stayed in one spot
- Read the whole time
- Got started right away
- Read quietly
for an entire 15 minutes! This is very impressive!
Ask your child to tell you how the I-PICK strategy helped him/her to choose right books!

What is The Daily Five?
The Daily 5 continues to be the focus of our literacy instruction in second grade. Take a few minutes to watch this video, it is a great overview of The Daily Five and how it is structured in the classroom. What can your child tell you about "read to self" and "work on writing?"
