Math Fact Fluency

Extra math is now part of our nightly math homework.  Please make sure your child is practicing his/her facts Monday-Thursday for at least five minutes a night.  There are also several wonderful math websites I've listed on my blog where the kids can play games to reinforce their addition and subtraction facts.  The Term 2 expectation is for children to know at least 25 addition and subtraction facts to 20 in a minute and a half.  Mastery of math facts is very important especially as children are introduced to 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction problems.  When you view your child's data binder, check to see how many facts he/she is getting correct. Special thanks to Mrs. Fleming, she's been working with the kids on fact fluency every Tuesday!

Hanging with Salty and Stripes!

Many of the kids spend a lot of time hanging out with our hermit crabs during indoor recess.  Check out the their cool creations!

Salty and Stripes visit the hospital for a broken claw!

They even have a playground!

And a cool obstacle course!

They sure are getting their exercise!

Sock Puppet Retells!

Retell Ropes

Retelling is a comprehension strategy we focus on during reading time.  This week we made Retell Ropes.  Our retell ropes will be used during reading time to orally retell the stories we are reading. After orally retelling,  we then have children write their retells.  Remarkable retells include:
Ingredients to a remarkable retell!

2.  Name the 2 comprehension strategies we have focused on so far during reading time.

Classroom News

During reading, we've been focusing on writing "remarkable retells."  Ask your children to tell you what makes a retell remarkable.  As you read at home with your children, have them retell their story.  Their retell should include the key details from the beginning, middle, and end of the story.  Also, be sure they include the characters' names and the retell should be in their own words.  Stay tuned for our sock puppet retells!

We just finished up our descriptive haunted house writing.  We used our sense of sight and hearing to write our haunted house descriptions.  Check them out at conference time!

Star work continues to be a focus in our classroom.  When I see "evidence" of star work, it is added to  the child's star work bag.  Encourage your child to do star work during homework time!

Star work=Name and date on paper, personal best work, accurate, neat, juicy verbs and adjectives, used writer's eyes to check work.  If there is an illustration it is sketched first!

Check out Erin's Experiment!

Erin was our Scientist of the Week this Week.  Check out her experiment!

End result
(The balloon would have inflated more but the water in our sink doesn't get very warm.  The warm water reacts with the sugar and yeast inside the bottle creating carbon dioxide.)
